From Mary Ruddy – Chair of the Identity Commons Stewards Council

The Internet Identity Workshop holds a special place among Identity Commons working groups. It is an event where anyone and everyone interested in working towards a shared vision of a decentralized, user-oriented identity layer for the Internet can come together and make things happen.

Part of the magic of IIW is that you never know what is going to happen ahead of time – and this event really delivered – featuring demonstrations of new technologies, conversations to create new standards, and discussions to forge new business alliances.

If you are not already doing so, I invite you to continue the energy sparked by IIW 2008b by joining one of our working groups. You can find a list of them and their descriptions at the end of this document and online here
From Kaliya Hamlin – Co-producer and Facilitator of IIW

This document comes at a real milestone for the IIW community. The Internet Identity Workshop is now 3 years old and the Identity Gang that it grew out of has been meeting for 4 years. Many members of the community have been working on aspects of the community vision for many more years before that.

The energy momentum of the community continues to build and this year major internet portals are adopting technologies that have been evolved in the community. There is an increasing awareness that open standards are essential to preventing identity lockin in walled garden silos. We have come a long way but there is still much more to do to forfill the purpose of Identity Commons – to support, facilitate, and promote the creation of an open identity layer for the Internet -- one that maximizes control, convenience, and privacy for the individual while encouraging the development of healthy, interoperable communities. We need to continue to work together enhancing the communication between working groups and raising awareness of our activities.

We would not be here today without the contributions of some key people and communities.
* The original founders of Identity Commons Owen Davis and Andrew Nelson along with early pioneers working with them including Fen Labalm, Victor Grey, Nicholaj Nyholm, Bill Washburn, Drummond Reed, Joel Getzendaner, Andy Dale, Christopher Allen, Mike Mell, and Eugene Kim.
* The second generation Identity Commons evolved in the summer of 2006 and arose out of a community conversations that included key input from John Ramer, Bill Aal, Brett McDowell, Dale Olds, Mary Ruddy, Paul Trevthick our lawyer Dan Perry.
* The thought leadership of Kim Cameron, Doc Searls, Phil Windley, Dick Hardt, Johannes Ernst, Pam Dingle Mary Rundle, Bob Blakely, Jamie Lewis, Ben Laurie and everyone who actively blogs and writes about the issues around the technologies that are being developed.
* The community stewardship of key online spaces like Planet Identity by Pat Patterson and the Story of Digital Identity Podcast that Aldo Castaneda produced.
* Everyone diving in and building new technologies, applying old technologies and getting open standards evolved to make it all work.

IIW would not be possible with out the community that gathers there or the sponsors that help support our gathering. We need to thank all of our sponsors throughout the years
Here is a brief explaination of how IIW works and what this book contains.
On Monday we host an introductory afternoon where industry leaders are invited to present about core technologies that relate to user-centric technology. Attendees are also give a one pager packet that contains summaries of all the different projects in the community. The list and most of the one pagers can be found on this page. You will find the copy and some slides excerpted of the presentations at the start of this packet

Tuesday morning we gather all together to create our agenda for the next two days. The methodology we use is called Open Space Technology and any one in attendance can put forward a topic for discussion, an idea they want to present or a question they hope to get answered. They are written on 8.5x11 paper and posted on two paper covered walls. Over the course of two days we have ten one hour sessions. Notes were take at virtually all of them and this book of proceedings contains those notes.

Each session has a title, a convener, the notes taker and a list of attendees. We list the people who signed the sheet saying the attended the session so if you know them and want to know more about what happened you can ask them. All these notes can also be found on the wiki and each session has its own page there - this is so you can to make changes and add updates. If you need a web reference to blog about some of the things in here please use the URL for the session to link to the material.

At the closing of Wednesday we do an open awards ceremony and the awarders along with the reason for their giving to the awardee is listed at the close of the proceedings.

We encourage blogging in the community - the tag for this event is IIW2008.
If you have a blog and would like to be included in the community blog Planet Identity http://www.planetidentity.org - just make a request to Pat Patterson.

We also have a by request community mailing list that is google group http://groups.google.com/group/idworkshop that you are most welcome to join.

Identity Commons is an active community with many groups working on the social, technical and legal aspects of an identity layer of the web. Please read the list of groups that are at the end of the proceedings you would be most welcome to join any that are working on topics of interest to you. If there is a topic that you think it important and would like to see it be part of the community it is also possible to start a new group or have an existing group/entity become an active part of this community too. Myself, Mary Ruddy or any of the Stewards can answer questions you might have.

I look forward to the coming six months, until the next IIW May 18-20, 2009 and the events in between where we will meet and continue to move this industry forward.

* The community stewardship of key online spaces like Planet Identity by Pat Patterson and the Story of Digital Identity Podcast that Aldo Castaneda produced.
* Everyone diving in and building new technologies, applying old technologies and getting open standards evolved to make it all work.

Meeting notes from May 14th Infrastructure meeting at IIW.

Attendees Fen Labalme, Eugene Kim, Kaliya Hamlin, Mary Ruddy, Mark Nakimura, Bob Snodgrass, Brian Walker(Parity), Bob Blakley

Notes

1) Fen provided an update on the infrastructure conversion efforts. All the web services are now served by the new box. Need to set up DNS, then get Stas access to move mail over. There are two people using IdCommons.net for the IMAP. Don't want to have to support IMAP on the new box. We need to notify them and get them moved off. There are also ~10 people using email forwarding.

2) Having the Identity Gang use a separate mailing list. Since Phil and Paul weren't available this item was deferred to a separate call.

3) Mailing list slowness. Determined that email forwarding slowness was not an ongoing problem. We need to make it very easy for new mailing lists to be set up. Need to document all the information that needs to be provided to set up a list quickly.

4) Vision for working group wiki pages. Have a summary list of working groups with descriptions to let people know about the different working groups. Have administrative wiki page for each group that has information about mailing list, stewards and their contact info. etc.

5) It was pointed out that we don't really want to be in the business of managing/defending IdCommons from SPAM.

6) Drupal status - Basic modules are done. Bob added a new menu to the left hand side to be more consistent. He is basically at a stopping point until hears what to do. Need to use as a community development tool. Have mashups, FAQ, etc.

7) Project to document old archives. There is a need to have someone review the old archives and document the historically significant (critical content) information. Judi is available to review the old messages. This project is expected to take 6 calendar months. Would need funding to pay her.

8) Bob asked questions about the new system. The new server is a virtual server, with Debian and security fire wall, RAID, nightly backups and weekly remote backup. There is a UPS. Are the backups being tested monthly?

Action items

* Send email to Andrew Nelson and Owen Davis who are using email.
* Outsource email to an inexpensive email service that can be OpenID enabled. This could be done with Electronic Embers. ~$25 per month for 20 groups and $1 for each additional group. (Note there had been an action item to have Brian look into anti black list services, but if we go with Electronic Embers, they should handle this.)
* Verify that backups are being tested monthly.
* Move list of working groups and descriptions to the website.
* Add page to the wiki documenting the process for setting up a new mailing list. This includes the name of the list, who will moderate it, working group list it should be documented on, etc. Also need to document what one must do as an owner.
* Need to review new web content(by more than one person) before it it put on the website. Wiki content doesn't always translate to appropriate web content.
* Bob to email Chris Allen for status update.
* Kaliya to get administrator password to mailing list she is administering and process items.
* Funding to pay for documenting the critical information in the old email archives.

Intrastructure-May-14-2008-notes

4) Project to document old archives. There is a need to have someone review the old archives and document the historically significant (critical content) information. Judi is available to review the old. This project is expected to take 6 calendar months. Would need funding to pay her.

5) Bob asked questions about the new system. The new server is a virtual server, with Debian and security fire wall, RAID, nightly backups and weekly remote backup. There is a UPS. Are the backups being tested monthly?

Action items:

* Send email to Andrew Nelson and Owen Davis who are using email.
* Outsource email to an inexpensive email service that can be OpenID enabled. This could be done with Electronic Embers. ~$25 per month for 20 groups and $1 for each additional group. (Note there hade been an action item to have Brian look into anti black list services, but if we go with Electronic Embers, they should handle this.)
* Verify that backups are being tested monthly.
* Move list of working groups and descriptions to the website.
* Add page to the wiki documenting the process for setting up a new mailing list. This includes the name of the list, who will moderate it, working group list it should be documented on, etc.

Attendees 2008a

Proposed Topics 2008a

May 15 Data Sharing Summit - IIW attendees are invited to stay for the event.

What Is This Workshop About?
The heart of the workshop is a practical idealism in working towards the shared vision of a decentralized, user-centric identity layer for the Internet.

Because the web was built around "pages", no tools or standards were created to control how the information about you was collected or used. At the Internet Identity Workshop we bring the people creating these tools and standards so people can safely manage their online identity and control their personal data.

It is not about any one technology - rather it is a place to discuss multiple interoperating –(and possible competing) – projects, standards, and networks for identity, data sharing, and reputation.

As part of Identity Commons, the Internet Identity Workshop creates opportunities for both innovators and competitors. We provide an open forum for both the big guys and the small fry to come together in a safe and balanced space.

There are a wide range of projects in the community:
# Open conceptual, community, and governance models.
# Open standards and protocols.
# Open source projects.
# Commercial projects.
# Projects to address social and legal implications of these technologies.
# Efforts to rethink the business models and opportunities available with these new technologies.

User-centric identity is the ability:
* To use one's identifier(s) on more then one site
* To control who sees what information about you
* To selectively share presence and profile information
* To maintain multiple identities and personas in the contexts you wish
* To aggregate attention, navigation, and purchase history from the sites and communities you frequent
* To move and share your personal data, relationships, documents, and other publications as you wish

All of the following are active topic areas at each IIW:
* Improving Existing Legal Constructs
** Privacy Policies
** Terms of Service
* Creating New Legal Constructs
** Limited Liability Personas
** Identity Rights Agreements
* Creating New Business Models
** Identity Oracle
** I-Brokers
* New Citizenship Perspectives
** Activism
** Community Event Coordination
** Community Identity and Data Sharing

How Does It Work?
Like the last IIW, we plan to organize this event using open space principles. We will make the schedule when we are face to face the morning of the 2nd day of the conference. We do this in part because the field is moving so rapidly that we your organizing team are in no position to know what needs to be talked about. We do know great people who will be there and it is the attendees who have a passion to learn and contribute to the event that will make it.

Also like the previous three workshops, we will hold IIW2008a at the Computer History Museum. The space there is perfect for this kind of event. We expect a large and energized community to attend and are counting on plenty of participation. Don't be put off by that, however, if you're just getting into this. Come and learn--the first day is designed to get everyone up to speed. You won't be disappointed.

* Improving Existing Legal Constructs
** Privacy Policies
** Terms of Service
* Creating New Legal Constructs
** Limited Liability Personas
** Identity Rights Agreements
* Creating New Business Models
